BROADMEADOWS Cricket Club president Ben Wood is flushed with the success of the club’s inaugural past players day, despite a washout in the first XI’s match threatening to spoil the event.

The club’s round 11 match against Oakleigh was originally intended to headline the reunion and organisers were worried about what the rain might do for attendance.

As it turned out, the unwanted downpour was a blessing.

“At 1pm we were quite concerned as to what this meant, because that was the whole premise of the day,” Wood said.

“In the end it actually turned out to be a bit of a godsend because the first XI players had connections with past players that were coming along so that just added to the day itself and it worked out well.”

The reunion saw more than 100 past and present players sit down to a meal at Broadmeadow’s Sewell Reserve, while former cricketer John Ford presented awards to Andrew Bonaguro, David Ashen and Eric Ruuska for reaching 150 games.

Victorian Sub District Cricket Association (VSDCA) record holder Geoff Turner, who has played more than 400 games for Broadmeadows, was in attendance, but the same couldn’t be said for number one ticketholder Eddie McGuire or Malcolm Blight and Greg Felton, all of whom received invites.

Wood, who has been involved with Broadmeadows Cricket Club for the past five years, said it was a great opportunity for him to meet club legends.

“It was great to meet people for the first time and to put a face to a name or a story,” he said.

Founded 36 years ago, the club boasts four XI clubs in the VSDCA, up to six junior sides in the North West Cricket Association and its own under 15 R.M. Hatch side, which was this year’s runner-up.
